Simile Snakes: Are you looking for a fun and engaging poetry lesson plan idea
that will involve your students in writing similes in their poems?
Are your students usually bored when they have to write a poem
in your class? They will love these unique poetry lesson plans!
This set of poetry teaching resources
will challenge your students to use similes in their poems. Then, your
students will write their poems inside fun snake shaped templates, which they
can also color and design themselves.
This poetry project is easy to assemble. Students cut out the two snake templates along
the thick black borders and glue the head and body templates together.
These finished simile poetry projects will make a very colorful
bulletin board display in your classroom that feature your students' snake shaped poems.
Everything that you need to complete this simile poetry assignment is included
in this set of simile teaching resources. All that you will need is scissors, coloring pencils, and glue.
For creative writing assignments, I believe that it is important for students
to go through the steps of the writing process.
For this reason, my students never begin writing their poems on their final
draft snake poetry templates, instead they write on first draft worksheets.
Then, they edit and revise their poems on their own, with a partner, or in
individual writing conferences with me.
Below is an example of the first draft worksheet that is included in this
set of poetry lesson plans.
After students have edited and revised the first drafts of their simile
poems, you should give them their final draft snake templates.
These snake shaped poetry templates measure 12 inches in length and 10 inches in width
after they have been assembled together.
These snake templates have thick borders, so it is easy for the students
to cut out their simile poetry templates themselves.
As I am introducing this simile poetry assignment to my students, I like to begin
by sharing my simile poem with my students.
At the front of my classroom, I display an example of what the final draft
snake poetry templates look like. By providing a visual example at the very
beginning of this lesson activity, my students know what their poetry
projects will look like when they have completed their final drafts.
For final draft poetry assignments, when I give my students fun templates
to write on, I have found that they tend to use their best effort, and
they are careful to not make careless spelling, grammar, and punctuation errors.
I have included color snake poetry templates for you to use as a visual
example to share with your students. By using the color snake templates, you will not have to
spend time coloring these snake templates yourself.
I know that it takes teachers a lot of valuable time to assemble their bulletin
board displays. Many teachers spend hours of time cutting out large display letters
or making a banner on their own at home on their computers.
This time is valuable and better spent on developing your classroom curriculum
and grading papers, so I have included a matching 5 page banner for your simile
poetry bulletin board display.
If you have access to a laminating machine, you can laminate your banner so
that it is durable and you can use it year after year for bulletin board
displays of these simile snake poems.
